Your question certainly is not stupid! Because I've asked myself the same question since I'm involved in the stockmarket.
I think there's something called Nasdaq Level II which allows investors to know who's on the bid, who's on the ask side, and so on. But I personally don't have access to such a service.
Regarding ODIS, I seem to remember though that several months ago NationsBank Montgomery was a big seller with ODIS: an SI member (Abel Viera?) told us that Montgomery kept itself on the ''ask side'' for several days in a row and then suddenly removed itself from it. The day Montgomery stopped its shorting game, ODIS' stockprice just jumped from $6.00 to $8.00...
Taking into account what happened yesterday with VSNT (a 10% drop!), I suspect that all the weakness in ODIS is just a side-effect: it's hard for the Wall Street herd to believe that one ODBMS vendor is shining with a 40% growth rate while the other is struggling for its life... They use to stick with their old saying: One big tide lifts all boats --not just one! The problem is that there're only two publicly traded ODBMS vendors... out of 10 (CA's Jasmine, POET, GemStone, O2, Objectivity, etc...) and it's not easy to know what's happening with privately held companies or the financial details of a peculiar product (CA).
Hence, it's quite possible that 60-70% of the growth in the ODBMS market is benefiting mainly one company, that is ODIS. After all, ODIS revenues for 98Q1 ($13M) were 3 times those of VSNT ($4.6M).
