Open a lexicon and note the connection of nephesh with breath or breathing. It means a "breather," "breathing creature". The confusion is produced by the translators: NIV spins nephesh 154 different ways, the KJV 33, the NWT 1.

KJV makes 1 Hebrew word, Sheol, into 3 English words: hell, grave and pit.
Here's it does to Nephesh: any, appetite, beast, body, breath, creature, dead body, desire, ghost, heart, life, lust, man, mind, one, own, person, pleasure, self, soul, thing, will, fish, hearth, mortal, will, would have it, anyone, deadly, etc. Sloppy and careless; how do you think God felt about it?.
RUACH is a separate Hebrew term, the Greek equivalent is PNEUMA, as in pneumatic. Both mean breath, wind, breeze, force, etc. Soul is not spirit. "The spirit [ruach] returns to God who gave it" Ecc 12:7
