It is unlikely Ericsson would ever buy VLSI. First, both sides realize Ericsson is paying less for their chips than if they owned the company. Second, it would be difficult for VLSI to continue selling to Ericsson competitors. Finally, what would they do with the rest of VLSI, other than telecom-networking- wireless?

If VLSI does get taken over, likely candidates are Intel, TI, Harris, and IBM. TI is in the midst of a restructure, IBM already bought a VLSI wireless competitor, so again Intel becomes the best candidate. Merger with LSI - don't see the benefit to either company.
