I agree with you...about the NT as the ultimate replacement.
98 IS an upgrade, but it isn't really being bought into - that's the point. And MSFT WAS hoping that corporations would buy into it as part of their "stepping stone" move to NT. However, most companies realize that it is a poor (and expensive) method of movement. If you are going to NT - then just go. MSFT wasn't counting on THAT. They really believe there will be a massive upgrade taking place...just like when people went from Windows 3.1 to 95.
So the "battle" exists not in my mind, but in reality. Will MSFT suffer? Not really in any substantial way (how can you with all that money in the bank?). But the flaws in Gates' "Road Ahead" are starting to become apparent. I don't think NT is the next step...I know my CIO is thinking past it already.
