("AlphaNet" or the "Corporation") today announced that it had reached a new traffic milestone on July 14 when it carried over 275,000 minutes of international telephone traffic on its global network. This represents a run rate of some 100 million minutes annually. AlphaNet utilizes innovative, proprietary technology to convert traditional voice signals into data packets for transmission over a data network ("voice-over-data network"). AlphaNet serves the wholesale, or carriers' segment of the international long distance telephone market. The Corporation's customer base includes resellers, mobile operators, calling card and callback operators, and other emerging and traditional carriers that require international long distance connectivity. AlphaNet entered commercial service in November 1997. Andre LeBel, President and Chief Executive, AlphaNet Telecom Inc., said, "We have overcome many technical challenges to accomplish the tenfold ramp-up in the level of traffic carried on our network over the last 10 weeks, as we begin to demonstrate the scalability of our technology and network architecture." He cautioned that, "While this augers well for achieving the business objectives that the Corporation has set for itself, there will be more hurdles and issues to be dealt with as we strive for continued traffic growth." "AlphaNet's technology provides the Corporation a significant cost advantage over traditional circuit-switched long distance telephone operators, and voice quality and network reliability comparable to traditional carriers," explained Mr. LeBel. The Corporation's technological success, combined with its marketing efforts, has resulted in 40 carriers signing contracts as of July 1998. AlphaNet anticipates that it will have some 50 carriers under contract by the end of 1998. The AlphaNet network extends to 12 countries which originate approximately 65% of the world's international switched public voice traffic. Within the next two years, the Corporation anticipates that it will have points-of-presence in some 35 countries. AlphaNet has off-net coverage worldwide.
