Granted - the vcr metaphor was not the standards case here.

I hope that this "going it alone" strategy doesn't isolate Cisco as far as being able to achieve manufacturing economies of scale and pricing ala Beta and VHS. Remember the $2000 beta vcrs before the consortium undercut them. 60% + gross margins will not hold forever as bigger players enter Cisco's bailiwick.

It just seems to me that a failed strategic alliance on the scale of LU or NT would be a blow to Cisco's long term business model.
