The first time we got paid was for a dance a few towns over. We received seventy five bucks, divided among four people, exactly $18.75 a person. An intoxicating feeling. We all thought, the first of millions. But such was not to be. I think we did a grand total of five paid gigs, roughly a hundred bucks a person. And one of those was a wedding for the drummer's cousin. Kind of an inside deal. My parents speculated that some other line of work might be more lucrative. They were right.
