Rillinois: Yes, if I had a billion or two to manage, I could not outperform the markets either. Thank goodness most people don't have that problem here with the exception of probably Brinker. Good for Brinker that he has recommended only one index fund -- the total market. Looks like Brinker has one up on the smart guys you cite. Why they manage 22 index funds according to the article. Some efficient market if you need 22 funds to capitalize on its efficiency. Brinker wins again with his total market recommendation. These guys are humping their 22 index funds and Brinker says all you need is one. Why I would like to compare their 22 funds with Brinker's one fund adjusted for risk. Funny how the 22 funds are not ranked with performance figures. Thanks for showing again how smart Brinker must be to outshine these geniuses. Now when did Brinker claim he could consistently outperform the market with his stock picks and what does the article have to do with calling the next bear market?

Rillinois,

How much of your money is in DFA?

As for completely efficient markets I side with what Charlie Munger says, "Twaddle! A type of dementia I can't even classify."

Contrary to popular beliefs, you can make a boatload of money by picking individual stocks. It is more temperament than IQ. This is precisely why I love the market. I tell you this is so much fun.

I am not advocating one style or telling anyone how to invest but if you have the desire, temperament and time you can do well with Mr. Market long term. Otherwise, note that I am not saying any method is wrong, indexing with Vanguards Total Index can work just fine.

"It has been helpful to me to have tens of thousands of students turned out of business schools taught that it didn't do any good to think." Warren Buffett

FWIW,
Lars
