Drag in Memory Market Forces Industry Reorganization

Texas Instruments' sale of its DRAM business to Micron
Technology is part of a reorganizing trend bracing the entire
semiconductor industry as the market continues to sag. Japanese
makers are also affected, as Hitachi <TOKYO:6501> is pulling out of
DRAM manufacture in the US and Mitsubishi Electric <TOKYO:6503> has cut
off output of wafers there. Fujitsu <TOKYO:6702> is quitting DRAM
manufacture in the UK in order to switch over to microcontrollers
and other logic products. Meanwhile, Korean companies are
attempting to move beyond their dependence on memory. Forecasts
say the world market for DRAM will bottom out this year.
