This doesn't pertain to Wells or your comments, but just like the individual is critical for the smooth operation of a group or nation, so the individual nation and its diversity is critical for the smooth running of the world. Driven by quaint idealism many think the destruction of boundaries is necessary for world harmony. I disagree. There are different approaches and different styles to get from here to there. Without a diversity of expression the possibilities of development are not fully explored. The autonomy of action is preserved only when there are individuals. Without autonomy the tendency is to glorify imitation, so invention is undermined. I guess it's all well symbolized in the communal dictatorship of Star Trek's Borg.
