David...maybe you were caught by surprise a bit more then others, it may be BIG news...but not unexpected IMHO. The Sprint news was BIG also.

I recently read an article where it said the Long Distance carriers would be passed by if they didn't start getting into these other areas...VoIP is bringing big changes with it. <gg>

Agreement Supports Local Minority-Owned Business; Lazo Technologies to Provide Key Elements of the Litespan Systems for GTE

DALLAS, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- DSC Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: DIGI - news) announced today GTE's standardization of the Litespan(R)-2000, DSC's Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) system. The two companies recently completed testing on the platform, which was announced last November as a selected product for GTE's standardization process. Litespan product deliveries have already begun this quarter to GTE.
Terry Coss, DSC's vice president, Sales, National Accounts, said: ''DSC is pleased with GTE's decision to standardize on Litespan. With more than 8 million lines in service today by carriers nationwide, our Litespan system is well-positioned in the telecommunications industry to support future applications and services. We are confident that Litespan will serve as an important revenue-generating portion of GTE's network.''
''Selecting a vendor that could support GR-303 interoperability on all of our switch types, especially the GTD-5(R) EAX, was critical in our decision to standardize on Litespan,'' said Barry Paulson, GTE vice president-operations planning and support. ''The deployment of Litespan will achieve GTE's goals of meeting our customers' needs for basic telephone service as well as high-speed data and video services.''
Litespan is an advanced Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)-based access platform. It supports a full range of narrowband to broadband services, including xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line technology), and architectures such as Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC). Highly modular in design, Litespan can be installed as a low line-sized, electrically fed system for basic service support. Then, as needed, the same platform can be easily upgraded to a full fiber architecture for support of future applications and growing subscriber demand.
DSC's minority business affiliate, Lazo Technologies, Inc. (LTI), will be stocking and assembling custom Litespan configurations for GTE. LTI is a Dallas-based telecommunications manufacturing company owned by Tom Lazo, Sr. LTI provides an array of products and services for the telecommunications industry, such as assembly, warehousing, staging, packaging and shipping. Working closely with both product developers and customers, LTI creates custom procedures to assure highly skilled product assembly regardless of the complexities.
Critical to the standardization of Litespan was the platform's ability to support GR-303 interoperability on the GTD-5 switch, which is widely deployed within GTE's network. DSC tested with AG Communication Systems, manufacturer of the GTD-5, to secure GR-303 interoperability. DSC and AG Communication Systems will continue to test together on all future GR-303 interoperability of Litespan, in order to ensure both companies are meeting the network needs of GTE.
With 1997 revenues of more than $23 billion, GTE is one of the world's largest telecommunications companies and a leading provider of integrated telecommunications services.
