I found this post on a Yahoo! thread a while back. It seems pretty appropriate here:

A friend of mines father invested in a small mid east water filtration company years ago. Along comes Coke Cola seeking a presence in the Mid East yet the water is not usable. So Coke buys them out. His shares in this small company were converted to Coke shares.

His Coke shares split so many times he stopped counting.

He gave each of his kids enough shares so they could buy their own home. Since then he has retired, lived a good life, put all his kids through college, traveled the world, gave to charity. Basically lived the good life.

He gave each of his kids enough shares so they could buy their own home, and they have seen their shares split and continue to grow each month.

Why? Because a small company had a technology that a big company wanted. Anything that you gain quickly you will lose quickly. Set your sites on the future and your kids future. Don't lose perspective. This gentleman I speak of won the good fight. **** (insert SGNC here) already won. You sell you lose.
