John's reply:

<<Novell could have had Orion-type services a year ago if it had gone with Wolf Mountain. It lost time, and it lost a critical edge because now that technology will be moving to its competitors.>>

==================================================
This week's contents:

1. "Novell, Psion partner for GroupWise"
Computer Reseller News, 6/22/98; Lee Copeland
techweb.com

Novell extends the capabilities of GroupWise and delivers two new legal applications to run on Psion's Series 5 pocket-sized computers. The added applications allow GroupWise's large installed base of attorneys "to take information with them and log their time properly while out of the office."
2. "Schmidt stresses importance of NDS, rivalry with Microsoft"
Computer Reseller News Online, 6/17/98; Steve Burke
crn.com

Hear what Eric Schmidt has to say about Novell's "crown jewels" - NDS, the upcoming release of NetWare 5.0 and its position on Microsoft in this interview with Computer Reseller News.

3. "Schmidt touts Novell's strength in networking"
Computerworld, 6/18/98; Marc Ferranti and Rebecca Sykes
computerworld.com

Emphasizing Novell's specialized niche position as a networking software vendor, Eric Schmidt in his keynote speech at PC Expo declares Novell has been successful with its focus on directory services and security. He also demonstrated NetWare 5.0, which garnered positive response from an impressed audience for its remote capabilities and centralized directory services.

4. "NT attitudes"
Computerworld, 6/22/98; Brian D. Jaffe
computerworld.com

Jeffe explores what happens after company executives, swayed by Microsoft's aggressive mearketing tactics, decide to introduce Windows NT into the networking environment. Although technologists initially greet the decision with "calm acceptance," they often end up unhappy with the decision because of the complications it creates. Michael Crowley of Rich Products Corp states, "More (NT) servers are needed to replace a comparable server in the NetWare world. NT is not ready for prime time." Randy Bryan of Hibenia National Bank contrasts the sales efforts of Microsoft and Novell and praised Novell for establishing a "very successful" relationship because they work closely with staff who have the technical skills and responsibilities.

5. "NetWare getting fast Java"
Computerworld, 6/22/98; Laura DiDio
* Available in hard copy only

Novell's announcement with Intel to deliver a faster, more scalable version of the NetFire Java Virtual Machine (JVM) was greeted with enthusiasm. Phil Easter of Greyhound Lines touts, "the NetFire JVM sounds good. Anything (Novell and Intel) can do to further improve my ability to run Java in NetWare 5.0 will be put to good use in my organization." Beta tester Mike Reed also gave NetFire high marks for its performance, which he has been testing for more than a month.

6. "Getting down to basics"
LAN Times, 6/22/98; P.J. Connolly
loantimes.com

Connolly reports Novell's acquisition of HiTecSoft Corp.'s NetBasic 7.0 for Java enhances NetWare 5.0's position as a Java application server. He states NetBasic 7.0 "could clear the way" for NetWare to grow as a platform for Web services by "making it easier to access NetWare-based resources."

7. "OS upgrade sets stage for enterprise IP"
LAN Times, 6/22/98; P.J. Connolly
lantimes.com

This excellent review of NetWare 5.0 beta 3 is a must-read. Connolly predicts the final version of NetWare 5.0 "is likely to be the single most important product release of the year" and praises its "easier than ever" ability to upgrade existing NetWare servers. He concludes NetWare 5.0 will be a "no-brainer upgrade, and a serious candidate for new installations."

8. "IT design: Is the tail wagging the dog?"
Network Computing, 6/15/98; Art Wittmann
techweb.com

Wittmann cautions his readers not to "go ripping out NetWare in favor of NT" without careful consideration as they'll be "just asking for trouble." He cites three examples of companies who had taken that course of action and regretted it. Wittmann concludes that although NetWare is not perfect, "it is superior to NT in many ways" and recommends a mixed NOS environment.

9. "Integrating NetWare and Windows NT"
Network Computing, 6/15/98; James E. Drews
techweb.com

In this article, Drews shows how you can leverage Z.E.N.works to get the "best of both worlds" - NetWare and NT. Don't miss this guide as Drews walks you through the motions of integrating NT and NetWare "in a snap with the help of Z.E.N.works."

10. "Novell cuts Java deal with Intel"
PC Week, 6/22/98; Claudia Graziano
zdnet.com

Graziano details the Novell/Intel NetFire announcement and highlights the speed at which NetFire can run. According to Chris Stone, Novell can attract more developers to NetWare by "offering them the best Java run-time environment available." Derrick Barbour, senior network engineer at DCMS Consulting, is in agreement and declares, "the news that Novell and Intel are committing to have the fastest JVM is icing on the cake for us."
