If you look at the volumes in YHOO AMZN and AOL in the past week or so they have been quite high; so I would not rule out mindless speculative buying contributing a major portion of the rally supplemented by short covering. Although, I could be wrong, the charts are more indicative of high-volume breakouts rather than short covering; maybe someone with access to short numbers can quantify it better.
