Alan,

You hear a juicy story. So does everybody else. You get hot for the property - so does everbody else. The astute vender, having a crowd lined up down the hallway, is not going to let anybody get a free peek and, possibly, diminish the value of the property. Just like the movies, you gotta buy a ticket to see the action. For sure, there is a lot of "checking around" through contacts to see if you can uncover some tidbits. Anybody prospected this area before. No? Guess we just gotta buy a ticket.

In May 1985 I witnessed the biggest bunch of hogwash from these same Bre-X players at Pagosa Fairfield Resort (Colo.) during an investment conference. Indonesian and Malaysian ridges so steep no helicopter could be landed. Geologists gone native. Alluvial gold in stream sediments to lend excitement to the hype. Novice MBA Securities Analysts just sucking up the hype and Aussie beer by the barrel. Watching some of todays leading gold analysts getting sucked in, I went outside, sat me down in the shade (bald as a billiard) and commenced writing "Nibbled To Death By Ducks" for James Capel. Thesis, gold stocks discounted $500 gold price but price was $475 and headed down due to CB deflationary policies. Sell golds.

The best scams are usually about properties in some absolutely unknown moose pasture. Russia and China are going to be extremely fertile fields over the coming years. Enough real properties to lend credibility. Exotic mystique for the public. too distant for John Q to go check out on vacation. Local officials corrupt so they can be bought. We'll have a new clutch of novice analysts after the upcoming washout. Just learn how to scale out on the way up.

BTW, big guys are often just geologists too overloaded with technical work to ever have a clue 'bout the market and scamming. Smart speculators tell you first to figure out who is an acomplished promotor.
