Once again, you have proved your ignorance of the networking industry. Only a handful of network vendor investors are truly able to read a press release or news articles and totally miss understand
everything that is being said. Congratulations Z. you are one of them.
If you can't understand what is being said, ask someone - don't assume.

This is not just an everyday ATM interoperability test. This is a revolutionary step in the WAN networking industry. This the THE FIRST TIME something like this has ever been done. What Ascend has done here is to integrate Digital Cross Connect and SONET/SDH Add-drop multiplexers into an ATM switch. This is the true convergence of Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks ---transmission networks (SONET ADM,DCS) and switching networks (data switches). If ATM vendors are able to build DCS line cards that will provide concentration, grooming, drop/insert routing, protection and bandwidth allocation, Service Providers will sit up and take notice - BIG TIME!!! Because.... SONET add/drop multiplexers are the most expensive parts of today's network. Replacing that equipment with ATM switches will lower a service providers provisioning costs by up to 75%. HUGE Savings!!! SONET doesn't earn service providers any revenue - it's all dumb plumbing. SONET is the old optical extension of the TDM world, and is not efficient in todays variable bit rate environment. So, with the exception of using it as an optical interface, it is of no use to the
Next Generation of data networks. So, while Lucent and Alcatel have announced plans to develop optical cross-connects, Ascend is already shipping products.

In the future, NN will integrate DWDM technology from Cambrian into the 36170. When they announce its successful interoperability with other hardware you'll be able to read the press release and understand what they are saying. And when an uninformed idiot from another thread posts the info and calls it another example hype and claims that NN is two years behind the development curve, you can point out how much of a moron he is when he attacks things he knows nothing about.

There is no embarrassment in asking questions if you need help with
understanding technology.
