Looks like 3Com has not turned the corner of getting terrible press coverage, like this one.
But look at it this way Ascend was getting it on the chin last year from the media and they had written it off because their myopic vision was only looking at the Remote Access division. But Ascend came back and kicked ass with the Core switching products and now the reports are all glory again.
BTW what exactly has Cisco done for the Carriers lately, besides the GSR1200, that the media is raving about ? They are still deriving most revenue from the LAN arena which the media admittedly says is in a decline and subject to pricing pressures.
Just because they are the darling is an old excuse. I was searching for an answer with their own rationale. I dont think I will find it.

PS. The Sprint network win was not new. They have been working on it for 2 years.
