I was wondering what you think of this Pirelli partnership?

Sup, well on the surface it looks like a good deal, maybe in response to CSCO's recently announced partnership with CIEN. Their is no doubt that DWDM connectivity will be a key requirement going forward for any carrier class switch vendor.

What bothers me is this. There are four major DWDM vendors (that I am aware). They are CIEN, NT, Pirelli, and LU. So what's wrong with this picture? Exactly. Why wasn't this an LU partnership? It would seem like a perfect way for the two companies to collaborate, in the interim, before any possible "closer ties".

So now what do we have.

1) LU buys Livingston (likely for the PM4 technology, a carrier class competitor of the TNT line).
2) LU buys Yurie (direct competitor of ASND's SA line).
3) LU announces new, next generation IP switch (competitive with the GRF line)
4) ASND announces DWDM collaboration with LU competitor Pirelli.

Draw your own conclusion, but mine is that this is not very supportive of a future LU/ASND merger.
