Wind River Shares Rise 17% on Optimism About Partnerships

Alameda, California, June 24 (Bloomberg) -- Wind River Systems Inc. rose 17 percent on optimism that the maker of software operating systems for consumer electronics and other devices is expanding its products' capabilities through partnerships.

Wind River shares rose 5 5/16 to 36 3/8 in trading of 899,000, more than double the three-month daily average.

Wind River makes software for so-called embedded devices such as cellular phones and color-photograph production machines that require built-in commands. The company has been expanding agreements with partners including computer and printer maker Hewlett-Packard Co. to include more features in its software.

They've been adding lots of interesting capabilities, targeted at the consumer market, so it can compete with Microsoft,'' said Sheila Ennis, an analyst at Hambrecht & Quist Group, who rates the stock ''buy.''

Deutsche Bank Securities analyst Michael Kwatinetz raised his rating to ''buy'' from ''accumulate'' today.

We believe the stock is going to appreciate as a function of the real earnings instead of some perceived opportunity,'' Ennis said.

Alameda, California-based Wind River's software competes with Microsoft Corp.'s Windows CE operating system in the market to run small electronic devices.

Trading in options to buy Wind River shares also surged. Volume on call options giving the holder the right to buy Wind River shares at a price of 35 in July rose to 106 contracts, up from trading of 26 yesterday.

It jumped before I could put on the oxygen mask. Hold on to your seats folks, the rise will be fast and sure as the MM fire the engines. Turn left at the moon, please.
