Good to see your still here. 'Fraid you ducked out to grab 5,000,000
beers. The bigest plus for this quarter as far as I'm concerned, was
"He (Paisley) also spoke of the progress 3Com had made in cutting back
expenses, especially in sales and marketing, saying the company has a
way to go to achieve its long-term goals. Total expenses fell to $511
million from $552 million in the final quarter of the last fiscal year".
This is where we got our 17&cent from. Paisley/Benhamou both say that
this next quarter sales "will be a challenge". This means that if
things don't pick up, we can still make decent earnings by attacking
the cost side of the equation.

3Com sees Q4 as turning point
Reuters - 06:51 a.m. Jun 25, 1998 Eastern

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Computer network equipment maker 3Com Corp.
reported that fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose 52 percent, edging
ahead of expectations, and executives declared the quarter a ''turning
point'' after a difficult year.

Benhamou said 3Com, which sells modems to both consumers and
Internet service providers, has now begun to see the market for
these products achieve critical mass and expects its growth to
accelerate by the end of the calendar year.

While Benhamou said it might take several quarters to hit its goal
of 20 percent sales growth each quarter, he pointed to several new
areas where sales are multiplying several times faster than those
of the company as a whole.

He highlighted the success of its Palm Pilot handheld computer --
one of the big retail product hits of the past decade -- sales of
which should grow by 75 percent annually for at least the next two
years.
