THREAD ---A followup to Ibexx post ---Dow Jones Newswires -- June 24, 1998 Australia Optus In Outsourcing Pact With Digital Equipment SYDNEY (Dow Jones)--Optus Communications Pty. Ltd., an Australian telecommunications concern, Thursday said it has entered into a A$250 million, five-year outsourcing contract with U.S.-based information technology concern Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC) which is a unit of Compaq Computer (CPQ). Under the contract, Digital will manage Optus' two data centers, network systems infrastructure, help desk, desktop and production support. "Digital will be responsible for the efficient management and future upgrades of the administration applications run from the data centers, as well as Optus' internal network systems infrastructure and services," the company said in a statement. Digital was chosen because it offered "a unified management structure, significant cost-savings and improved service levels," according to Bill Hope, Optus chief technical officer. The contract is part of Optus reviewing all aspects of information technology to align itself with the world's best practice operation, the company said. "The IT function is critical to the success of Optus and an integral component of Digital's proposal was a comprehensive technology refresh," Hope added. To meet Optus' service delivery needs, Digital will establish an operations management center over the next six months, Optus said. U.K.-based Cable & Wireless Communications PLC (CWP) owns 49% of Optus, while Australian health care and transport concern Mayne Nickless (A.MAY) holds 25%. Analysts believe the shareholders in Optus are working toward an initial public offering of shares, expected towards the end of 1998. BEST WISHES BILL
