I really don't see DWM being practical for wireless, because of the way the bits are encoded as a large number of different signal levels used, according to the patents.

Also, there are numerous other companies in the wireless field that are much better funded than IAS, and who are fiercely competing in the market. They just had an incident at the ITU international standards body, where Swedish manufacturer Ericsson was trying to get its wireless CDMA method certified as a standard and the chairman of that committee happened to be from their rival Lucent, so there was a big rumble about people trying to set standards to benefit a particular company.

Low earth orbit satellites (LEOsats) are a promising technology, but the initial players, like Motorola's Iridium project, want to charge too much to use the service to make it feasible for the developing world, at least for now.

Here's an example of appropriate technology in the developing world: Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries on the planet. There are women who make a living providing phone service. Basically, they have a cellular phone they rent out to friends and family as needed, and track down the person when a call comes in for them. Not a particularly glamorous solution, but it works, and it is cost-effective.
