I haven't read the article about bloatware yet, but I think the success of the PalmPilot and other limited function tools is another symptom of the same problem. Think about it. People are actually willing to *learn to write a new alphabet* rather than struggle with WinCE-based palmtops.

Personally, I think you'll see a lot more products like the PalmPilot in the next few years. That is, more products that handle a small number of functions very well and very inexpensively. Digital cameras, digital books, and the CrossPad spring to mind as examples. The desktop PC isn't going away, but I expect it will become less and less of a growth driver.

(Several interesting articles on all of this in the June Wired. Not on the Web yet, unfortunately.)

That's bad news for companies that live or die on sales of full-function PCs, but good news for semis in general and particularly ASICs.
