Essentially, he indicated that immediate term prospects are fairly dismal, that the CMP business is nice and growing - he expects it to become a $500M business for AMAT alone.

He further believes that AMAT has the tool set for next generation chips, that the chip makers will come to AMAT once they're ready to start spending again. Once the first chip maker moves, the rest are forced to follow. (Called this a slingshot effect: either that's a rotten analogy or I should get another hour's sleep. I liked his "over ripe bananas" analogy of about 2 conference calls ago much better.)

He didn't agree with analyst's view that recovery would not start before mid 99. But he didn't disagree, just indicated that he couldn't see that far.
