Sprint ION was a bit sexier as it drove ATM closer to mass consumption (using DSLAMs with ATM network interfaces for residential access). That really would push up the chip volume.

AT&T and all other carriers will increasingly (if not exclusively) use ATM as the "converged" backbone technology of choice. AT&T/TCI deal doesn't really drive ATM closer to the user, just (maybe) increases their backbone utilization by tying cable modem access from TCI to either the voice network (not today(-;), Frame Relay network, and then for longer hauls, using the ATM net....
