thall, if they have only some 30 lbs out of the original 2000 pounds, it is quite possible that they do not have much quartz, then to make a slag (to collect in it the basic metals such as iron, calcium etc.), it would be preferred to add back some quartz. In their original smelting they did no need any quartz because the ore contained ample quartz.
