S&P Upgrades 3Com Corp. to Accumulate from Hold
Thursday June 25, 1998 (09:30 am EST)

3Com Corp (COMS) posted fourth quarter earnings per
share of $0.17 versus $0.12 per share one year earlier as
lower operating expenses offset flat sales. Standard &
Poor's upgraded its opinion on the shares to accumulate
from hold.

Results for the current quarter include a charge for
purchased in-process technology. The company also set
a buyback of up to 10 million shares.

S&P analyst Aydin Tuncer said the earnings per share
were in line with Wall Street's mean estimate. He said
revenues matched his estimate, flat year-to-year, but rose
10% from the previous quarter. Systems product sales
rose 8%, with client access products (NICs and modems)
down 6%, he noted.

Tuncer feels channel inventory is now under control,
improving the company's revenue visibility. He pointed out
that gross margins improved 100 basis points sequentially
and operating costs fell. Given the stabilization of its
business and opportunities in cable modems and remote
access, he believes the shares are attractively valued at
16 times his $1.74 calendar 1999 earnings per share
estimate.
