Mark, Informix is in its own unique situation. The ills that effect Informix and Sybase are vastly different. Sybase had a bad product release and made major acquisitions (Powersoft, MDI, and consulting) and didn't facilitate a smooth integration or unification of these products and services. Informix frauded the investment community with earning for 1994, 1995, 1996, and most of 1997. Informix remains under SEC investigation. Informix also made a major acquisition (Illustra) and struggles to incorporate technologies and profit from it.

Informix had to obtain $165 MM in capital investments and credit in order to survive. Sybase has $180 MM in debt free cash and investment capital.

Informix has to perform at certain levels in order to satisfy its credit agreements. As an investor I am concerned that Infomix may once again falsify or creatively account for revenues to keep these credit agreements or if they miss these targets what will happen? That IMO is the issue.

Comparisons between the 2 companies, as to which is worse off, has better products, and technologies will not drive either's stock price higher. Only business execution and management can do that. Both companies have almost entirely new management teams now. Let us judge each situation independently. If all goes well both Sybse and Informix investors will be very pleased by the end of Q4.
