Mohan, I think Samuelson is right in believing that the decrease in the stock market and the weakness of the yen are restraining the Fed. BUT -- I don't see the reason to increase rates. Inflation seems to be illusory, oil and other commodities are low, wages are increasing, but productivity increases are outstripping wage increases. So why meddle? Actually, I think that an increase in the discount rate could be counterproductive in resuscitating the Asian Pacific economies.
