I also am skeptical of a DD/rig ratio of 2.

I see two factors affecting the outcome of this ratio:
(a) Increasing capacities will put downward pressure on this ratio.
(b) The standardization of chipsets by Intel along with advances in BIOS software sigificantly reduced the pain factor of adding more HDD, putting upward pressure on this ratio.

Going forward, that sealed-case PC spec "Device Bay" would do a lot to increase this ratio. If hard disks were as easy to install as, say putting a tape in a VCR then the upgrade/supplementation market would open up to a lot more users. A LOT more.
