'The Bug on the Web

Numerous Y2K web sites focus solely on the electric utility industry, the impact of the Y2K bug, and Y2K challenges and successes (see www.EUY2K.com for example). Along with Y2K status and survey reports on the industry, there are informative "real-life" examples (www.euy2k.com/reallife.html) of Y2K-related testing experiences in the industry. In one example, Hawaiian Electric Company details how their Y2K team identified significant problems with their energy management system (EMS), the brains of the power system at all electric companies. Through proper testing, they were able to determine that their EMS system would crash on the date rollover to 01/01/2000, causing a major power outage and loss of all generating capacity. In 1997 they implemented a Y2k fix (www.euy2k.com/hecoy2k.html).
