The 555 is a low resolution (ie - VERY low frequency) monostable oscillator. It's part of every freshman EE's lab kit. Bout as low tech as they come, like the venerable lm741 op amp. Has zero knowledge of dates - it just regulates the charging and discharging of a capacitor. In college I designed a device to share a computer running a step select speech program for people with ALS with up to 7 patients and a nurses station in a hospital ward. I believe I used a 555 in each of the 8 controllers to cycle a led display from 0 to 8 in one second intervals... Anyway - sorry... It is just that remembering my _old_ college days (hell, I'm 33 now) is just more interesting than watching Tava light up margin calls... JohnnyH
