After heating up a section of the bore hole, you temperature sense the temp. decay rate. Any changes in the rate means there is different material on the other side. I'm sure past studies show the patterns for oil and gas. Plus you can vary the starting temp for different rates.

The magnetic resonance probably has to do with a change of inductance because of the difference in material behind the bore hole and is detected by a change in resonance frequency. Again, you look for patterns based on past research.

How am I doing?

I believe NMR is the same technology as MRI . The name was changed due
to negativity associated with the word 'nuclear'.

Since the medical field uses NMR/MRI to create a picture of human interior, by way of using the magnetic properties of hydrogen, I suppose it can be applied to building an image and therefore deducing the chemical/physical makeup of the earth on the other side of an oil drilling pipe.

I found an interesting site (http://bmrl.med.uiuc.edu:8080/MRITable/) where one can view each and every element's unique magnetic resonance 'signature'. Although it seems that only hydrogen's pattern is used?

I am a telecom engineer, NOT a quantum physics/chemical engineer, so I could be off base. Feel free to correct my mistakes folks.
