I forgot to mention that not all wells have to be cased. And the deeper wells may have several depths where casing has been installed, because of formation integrity.....don't want the well caving in.

The primary controlling factors for casing a well are depth and integrity of the stratigraphy.

I would assume they would use both methods to cross check where possible.

BTW, if Magnetic Resonance makes sense, how about ultrasound?
