Unless the stock is hard to borrow to short, or you want to be able to reinitiate a short on a downtick, there is no advantage to being boxed over being out of the position. I imagine that brokers can convert a boxed position into a closed position with a few clicks of the mouse, and the only issue is making sure that you aren't charged for another commission.

As you have already filed a complaint, it should be taken care of without any problem.

Etrade will close a boxed position at no charge to you, I suppose other brokers would also do the same; I mean if the worst one among them is...;-)
I would not worry about this.

It will take a couple of days for a broker to close the position.
No commission charge, but in the mean time you will get charged
for margin interests for both positions.
