Well I didn't mean to imply that the hole was necessarily played out in reality only that it must have at least been thought marginal or played out when it was abandoned or shut down. After looking down some of these holes, I am sure that some will continue to be considered played out, and some will offer some prospects for exploitation.

That also raises another question. How many holes can be examined per month and what percent can be expected to yield a profitable prospect for re-opening? And then what percent of those can be expected to then make it to break even/profit status?

You have not really expanded upon enhanced recovery IE fracturing techniques using acid mixtures and high pressure gases. Halliburton is very good at what they do, and the techniques have been improving by leaps and bounds. Not to mention steam and water flooding. All these methods can be used to improve recovery of old wells, particularly if the new logs are evaluated carefully. There have also been alot of new efforts into finding oil & gas in zones that have been overlooked simply because they went looking for oil in most cases at the depths where it should be instead of letting it come to them. I have seen it happen, the driller, toolpusher, and mud man all sitting around waiting for the geologist to say pull her out we are going to core here. And we all look at each other amazed, because we have already gone through the porosity where the oil was, and we need to do a drill stem test instead of core. Or the other way, we get done coring and we hit the zone deeper than the geologist thought, and instead of testing, we keep right on going. It wasn't where "HE" thought it should be so it isn't there. It was always my contention that we probably missed as much oil as we found because the geologist treated the rig crews like idiots so they would screw with him by running less weight on bit to make it look like there was no oil there. I have seen many strange things in the oil biz, but it seemed like the old tool pushers and company hands always had people pegged the best and knew better than anyone what was going on downhole.
