Paul, The clue is we have reached a levelling off of performance increases. Is a 400 Mhz twiceas fast as a 200 Mhz whatever? No I see performance increases of 6% or so when you get a cpu speed up of 50%, even if you go from family to family.
In truth other limitations are interposed to produce this effect. This has reduced the driving force to upgrade regardless.
Special niches like "cheap fast games" give a chance for AMD to prosper. Will Intel cut P-II to below the K63D?? can they.

The press is full of reports of this levelling off effect, I am amazed you choose to ignore it.

Who needs faster word processors? Spread sheets, cash registers etc. A few still need speed, some graphic work stations for autocad and speech to text demands fast CPUs as does video on-line editing, but the rest are going for the $600 machines.
