Warren, Good to see you again, Stranger! <s>

As one would imagine, last mile techs have matured to a great extent, and they have been integrated into a swarm of new application level technologies, hence, like every child when it reaches a certain age, last mile discussions have left home.

I'm seeing the confluence of multiple disciplines manifest themselves in the emerging Voice over Internet Protocol technologies, for example, and there is accordingly some discussion taking place in the VoIP thread about last miles. Also, with short haul DWDM and emerging wireless carriers now becoming a reality, some of the discussion that was heretofore the exploratory purview of this thread has drifted into those respective companies and sectors as well, and so on.

I have found some of the previous discussions here invaluable in the past. Any suggestions on how to resurrect them and the interest level here, given that so many other threads now subsume this topic?

I've been discussing this prospect with Ray Jensen lately, most recently on the VoIP thread, and if I get the time, I'd like to bring some relevant excerpts from those other threads here as an abstract, a treatment of sorts, and see if we can't get something going here again.

Best Regards, and Come Back, Frank Coluccio

With the AT&T TCI merger T is saying that they will be able to bypass the RBOC's by offering local phone service over TCI's cable.
What type of box, at what cost, will allow them to offer POTS over cable?
Where will the -48 come from, if its locally generated then the feature of the phone working when the power is down is lost ? I would think that is unacceptable to many. A local battery for each residence would be very expensive.
Who would pay to install and maintain the local equipment?
Has this ever been done on a commercially viable, wide scale install?
Any comments on any of the above would be appreciated.
