Viagra comes to the rescue of Brazil town

Reuters, Thursday, June 25, 1998 at 21:38

SAO PAULO, June 25 (Reuters) - A Brazilian mayor said on
Thursday he was giving away the love drug Viagra to men in his
small town in a bid to boost population growth and secure more
federal aid.
"Expenses are going up and revenue is falling. There is
nothing else I can do," explained Elcio Berti, mayor of
Bocaiuva do Sul in the southern state of Parana.
Berti, whose attempt last year to outlaw condoms was ruled
unconstitutional, told Reuters that federal aid to the town
would fall to $70,000 a year from $110,000 if the town's
population did not rise to 12,000 from its current 10,000.
To speed population growth, City Hall has begun handing out
4,000 samples of the American anti-impotence drug to "those in
need."
Berti said the plan should not stir as much controversy as
his bid to prohibit condoms.
"They said my condom ban was unconstitutional and a health
risk so I had to do something else. Viagra is so popular I
thought why not give this away free," Berti said.
Even if Viagra does not help the town grow to 12,000, the
mayor said his plan would draw attention to the plight of small
Brazilian towns which are losing their populations to larger
cities.
U.S. pharmaceutical group Pfizer Inc. started marketing the
distinctive blue pill that helps men overcome erectile
dysfunction, in April.
