TAIPEI -- Acer Semiconductor Manufacturing Inc.
(Q.ACE) has signed a licensing agreement with
International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) for the
latter's advanced logic process technology, the
Taiwanese chipmaker said Friday.

Acer Semiconductor hopes to begin initial production
of chips using the 0.25 micron technology during the
fourth quarter of 1998, and to be manufacturing in
volume by the first quarter of 1999.

Just to give you some idea, it is possible to revise the masks and run wafers and package them in about 2 weeks if you have enough incentive. And this includes running wafers from zero.

Intel, actually announced only a 2-3 week delay in one release and stated that the fix was being evaluated by OEMs. I think OEMS already have "fixed" parts in hand. There is technology whicj allows one to make design edits on completed chips in a few hours (FIB). So I think this is no big deal.
