I wholeheartedly agree first and foremost don't risk what you cannot afford to lose. By the way the statistic is 1 in 7 VC deals work out well. But the odds increase substantially depending on the house, as the better houses see the better deals. And you are absolutely right that VC's always have an exit strategy, which is an IPO or a bigger fish, does it always work, no. I respect SD for having the courage to report what others do not wish to report because of the controversy. But I think you will see more of this type of journalism in the future. They have received the accolades for a reason (and accolades from their peers) which is the best kind, but I am not here to tout them, so anyway I agree that all small companies are crap shoots. I hate to quote statistics but 1 in 3 new businesses fail in the first year. 50% fail within the first 3 years. An ugly picture. Yes I know that this business has been around. I choose to play the odds when they are more in my favor. I'd rather by a YHOO or an AOL after the IPO when there was a little history, which I did and still have been rewarded nicely. Would I have had much larger returns investing early on, yes but look at NSCP and some of the others, NSCP opened after its IPO and nosedived, as some of the others, after the euphoria wore off and there was some history, I bought them. AXXS I might add is a good example. They are BB only a couple of million shares outstanding trading for pennies. But if you notice not one press release. Because they practice what they preach. They have a market cap of a couple of mil vs. hundreds of mill and they choose to wait until all their filings are done and they are listed before they go and promote themselves, and they obviously have the forum to promote themselves if they wished. So I am glad you brought it up. Because when I saw SD, I simply didn't say since the Trade publications praised their journalism, its gospel, I again did my homework as to who these people were and what they were about.
