Accelar Routing Switches Selected by PanAmSat for Upgraded LAN Services; Offers First 100Mbps Fast Ethernet to High-End CAD Users at Long Beach Site

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 1998--Bay Networks(R) Inc. (NYSE:BAY) today announced that PanAmSat Corp. has selected the Accelar 1200 routing switches to upgrade its Long Beach, Calif., communications center to 100Mpbs Fast Ethernet.

PanAmSat, the world's leading commercial provider of global satellite services, conducts high-speed business communications applications for its internal operations through three main sites located in Greenwich, Conn., Atlanta and Long Beach, Calif.

"PanAmSat provides a worldwide service that requires high-bandwidth, reliable networking equipment as a key component," said Dave Shrigley, executive vice president of Marketing, Sales and Service for Bay Networks. "We support their commitment to leadership in technology and feel their deployment of Accelar routing switches reinforces the quality and innovation our products bring to our customers."

"We chose the Accelar routing switch because it integrated so well with our existing Bay Networks infrastructure. It's reliable, scalable, cost-effective -- we plan to install the switch at other locations throughout the company," said PanAmSat Director, Information Systems, Doug LeMasurier.

In January, the LAN group in Long Beach installed an Accelar 1200 routing switch to provide Fast Ethernet connectivity for selected internal users on one segment of the facility's two-segment LAN backbone infrastructure. The Accelar 1200 routing switch provides high-end design and manufacturing professionals the additional throughput needed to transmit and receive large, complex CAD/CAM files more efficiently.

The Long Beach location already uses a variety of Bay Networks' products, including ASN(TM) routers, BayStack(TM) 300 series 10/100 Ethernet switches, BayStack 350 10/100 autosensing Ethernet switches, and Optivity(TM) Network Management software.

The Long Beach facility installed the Accelar 1200 routing switch with an 8-port 100BASE-T module and a 16-port 10/100BASE-T Ethernet module. The Accelar 1200 routing switch is a modular, flexible, scalable device that can be configured with up to 96 10/100 ports or 12 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Bosco,

Thanks for the quick response! You are correct, I could have gone to Edgar-Online, etc., but I thought I might get a quick thumbnail here (along with some good advice), and you came through. Thanks again!

I know what you mean about hedging risk. I'm wary of a lot of such opportunities, but when I like them, I invest. For example, I think the CIEN/TLAB arbitrage is an excellent opportunity (and still offers about 1 1/2 points). Look for this deal to close in August/September.

Even combined, there is talk now of CSCO buying the combo (which adds nothing to the gain, but protects the likelihood of it occurring). Further, there is a slim, slim chance that someone might offer more for CIEN than TLAB, which would be an unexpected gain. Any investment has risk, of course.

In addition to the CIEN/TLAB play, I write monthly out of the money naked puts on CIEN. Theory being that it gives triple protection: (1) If the puts get assigned (i.e., I get CIEN), then I essentially bought it at a discount, (2) the out of the money premium offers some buffer and (3) the CIEN/TLAB spread offers a third layer of protection (i.e., if the stock gets assigned, it still should move up to the level of TLAB in time (or down with TLAB but with a diminishing spread).

Anyway, thanks again for your rapid and thoughtful response!
