Stitch, we need one of you at the right time to save us from nine of you, right? (sorry about the poor taste. -g-) That's why I think the US should focus on curbing the speculation here at home than trying to tell the rest of the world what to do.
I think Japan's problems are structural. Contrary to what the pigs on the Wall Street say, there are no quick fixes. Whatever these guys are trying to fix is helping the very people who knowingly or unknowingly created the mess. Not the masses. In the first place, why let the banking system allow to breed a speculative frenzy in any country? It happened in Japan. Most recently in the rest of Asia. We, instead of learning from the mistakes of the others, continuing the same nonsense here. If it were only Japan, the only nation that is struggling, perhaps some of the measures these pundits suggesting are appropriate. But not when more than 1/2 of the world is struggling.
Simply put, things are just out of control for the humans to handle. I think a natural heal for the system is to let the excesses vanish from the scene on their own at their own pace. But, we have to pretend to be doing something, don't we? In that process, the pain will only be much worse. It is funny that the economic system is man-made, but controlled by human emotions on which only nature, or shall I say God, has control of.
Speaking of emotions, Governments are made of people, even though for the people (democratic, I mean.) wrt Japan, here is how I think their emotions work.

Stitch, on what Japan should do or shouldn't do - TheEconomistagees wit me:
<<Perhaps the government should look at it this way: the really bold and radical thing to do would be to continue to stand back and watch that disaster take its course. Sorting out the banks right now is actually the timid, indecisive, tinkering thing to do. Does that help? >>
