I think a more likely explanation is a data entry error.

People "cover shorts" - buy back at unfavorable prices - when they see a stock going up!

AMD's stock hasn't headed northwards since they leaked out that IBM was going to buy some of Jerry's stock. That rumor, of course, was planted to get a favorable debt offering into the hands of DLJ's favorite clients.
