Yes, Newbridge is quite abit ahead of Ascend as far as technology, market share and R&D go.
Newbridge is a huge contributer of standards in the ATM Forum a non-profit(or so I think it is) group that makes up standards for ATM. They also sell more standard compliant ATM devices then any other company. Cisco lovers will dispute this but the truth is none of their routers before late-1996 (early '97?) were ATM forum compliant! They refused to adopt standards that Newbridge had developed or Lucent did if you believe their law suit!(but they sue everyone!)

Ascend is hardly cutting edge compared with NN. Their partnership with Siemens and 3com provide anything they could possibly want R&D wise as well as in markets penetration the mainstreet line developed jointly with Siemens provides a wealth of uses that are scalable to any groups needs.

Newbridge truly is poised to rip appart the competition. Nimble as a cat they can adopt a technology within 3 months of its development for customers use compare that to Ciscos' 7-8 month lagging pipeline (just like their lagging routers that are bottleing up this internet!)

The answer is an undisputed YES they are WAY ahead of Ascend!

Have a great Weekend!
