Company Press Release

Waste Systems International, Inc.
Awarded Privatization of Newport,
New Hampshire Landfill

LEXINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 4, 1999--Waste Systems International, Inc.
(NASDAQ:WSII - news), an integrated non-hazardous solid waste management company, today
reported that it was selected through a public bid process as the exclusive company to develop a
strategic plan for the Privatization of the existing 80-acre Newport, New Hampshire landfill from the
New Hampshire-Vermont Solid Waste Project, which serves 29 communities in southeastern
Vermont and southwestern New Hampshire. The facility is strategically located between the
Company's existing Moretown, Vermont landfill and the South Hadley, Massachusetts landfill, which
is expected to open in 1999. Upon successful completion, the addition of the Newport, New
Hampshire facility will dramatically enhance the disposal asset base the Company has in this
geographical region in which to leverage the acquisition of collection and transfer station operations.

Commenting on the Newport facility, Philip Strauss, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said,
''We are very excited about this opportunity. This facility will open up new markets to the Company
and fits well into our strategy of first acquiring long term disposal capacity followed by acquiring
collection companies and transfer stations to secure long-term waste flow.''

''WSI is now clearly the leading privatizer of solid waste assets in the secondary and rural markets
in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic markets having already privatized two landfills, the Bedford,
Fulton, Huntingdon Tri-County municipal landfill in Hopewell, Pennsylvania and the South Hadley
municipal landfill in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and Vermont's largest transfer station located in
Burlington, Vermont, previously operated by the Chittenden Solid Waste District. The Company
continues to pursue additional privatizations throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic markets,''
Strauss added.

The Company's acquisition of the landfill is subject to final negotiation and execution of a Definitive
Agreement, final vote of the twenty-nine member committees of the Project and the transfer of the
landfill's permit to the Company.

WSI is an innovative solid waste management company. The Company currently has operations in
Vermont, Central Pennsylvania, Central Massachusetts and Central New York which serve over
52,000 commercial, industrial and residential customers. The Company is also evaluating other
acquisitions and opportunities primarily in Northeast and Mid-Atlantic markets.
