Dave and All,

I decided to build my own because A. I was upgrading many components from an existing box. B. Wanted a Dual PII MB which most major oem's won't sell you outside their workstation class for many more $$$. C. I wanted some specific components and case design which aren't easy to find elsewhere. D. Its fun....

So in my case I think I did OK on the cost point because of the dual system etc... I think the more esoteric the system your building is that price advantages may start to exist since the big boys don't offer those types of configs. At the time I built mine, I could find a case, Tyan 1562D MB, and 2 PII 300's and 256M RAM for less than $1500 in a bare bones or kit system. using pricewatch I was able to achieve this. Remember, all my comments about returns, warranties, and service, I made before. This machine is my personal toy not one of my machine(s) I make my living using.

I am happy with the results but still have two problems....

1. system fails to boot one out of every ten times... fails to properly detect the hard drives.

2. Get an IO port conflict with my intel pro 100B PCI card that I can't seem to get rid of. works for about a week and then the whole network stack will die or Blue screen...

BTW: Bought a new card yesterday to try and beleive it or not there was no card in the box. Manuals, disk and no card... :)
