Win98 sells 200,000 copies on its first day Friday June 26, 5:15 pm Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: PC Data Windows 98 Sells 250,000 Units on its First Day RESTON, Va., June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft's Windows 98 operating system upgrade is on its way to being the best-selling title of 1998. PC Data projects that U.S. retailers sold more than a quarter-million units during the software's first day of release and will sell a half million units through this weekend, which is only slightly less than the Windows 95 operating system sold in its first four days. All numbers are based on reports of first-day sales of retailers and mail order companies. ''Two hundred and fifty thousand units is nothing to sneeze at for a June launch of a relatively minor operating system upgrade,'' said Roger C. Lanctot, Director of Research for PC Data. ''If present trends continue, Windows 98 will become the best-selling title in 1998 by the end of next week.'' Forty percent of those who bought Windows 98 also purchased Microsoft Plus! 98, a companion CD. At the Windows 95 launch in August 1995, only 30 percent of those who bought Windows 95 also purchased Microsoft Plus! Microsoft Plus! 98 sold approximately 100,000 units in its first day, according to PC Data estimates, and is destined to surpass 200,000 in its first week. Much of the credit for the success of the Windows 98 launch goes to Microsoft's cooperative marketing programs with major retailers. ''Several major computer chains including Fry's Electronics, Future Shop, CompUSA, Computer City and Micro Center opened their doors at midnight on Wednesday for the launch of Windows 98,'' said Lanctot. ''And some stores, such as Staples and Media Play, had midnight openings in a few of their markets. The promotional activity was first class and demonstrated what a healthy dose of marketing can do to stimulate software sales,'' he added. PC Data will provide daily sales updates, throughout the Windows 98 launch.
