Headline: VLSI Technology Licenses Wipro IEEE-1394 Synthesizable Core Solutions; IP Speeds Time to Market for Firewire Systems on a Chip ====================================================================== SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 29, 1998--VLSI Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:VLSI) and Wipro Ltd. will cooperate to bring high-speed IEEE 1394 (Firewire) solutions to the custom IC market. Under terms of the arrangement between the two companies, VLSI has licensed rights to use Wipro's IEEE 1394 SoftCores(tm) Intellectual Property ASIC blocks for integration into VLSI's libraries of on-chip cores and building blocks. The licensing agreement results from over a year of joint engineering work conducted by the companies to develop reusable and flexible IEEE 1394 "building blocks." The productized IEEE 1394 Phy and Link cores will enable both companies to rapidly deploy high-speed serial communications functionality for consumer, communications and computer networking applications targeting their OEM customer bases. The IEEE 1394 high-speed multimedia serial bus is a digital communications interface running at 100-, 200- and 400-Mbps currently, and on up to Gigabit-class speeds in the future. IEEE 1394's status as a universally recognized industry standard and its relatively low implementation cost, promise to make it the interconnect of choice as consumer electronics and computing technologies converge. Sudip Nandy, vice president of marketing for Wipro's Semiconductor IP Division, said, "We see this as an ongoing relationship between two leaders in their fields. VLSI's custom silicon competencies and focus on high-volume 'convergence' market applications complement Wipro's reusable and flexible SoftCores technology and system development expertise, enabling the rapid market deployment of high-speed digital solutions for our respective customers." Ricky Taylor, director of engineering for VLSI' s Internet and Secure Products commented, "Wipro's IEEE 1394 SoftCores solutions are not only one of the first available synthesizable cores on the market, but they mesh very nicely with VLSI' s design-reuse strategies; existing cell, block and FSB libraries and advanced, deep submicron process technology. IEEE 1394 connectivity is emerging as a leading requirement for intelligent consumer, computing and entertainment products. Being able to add 1394 communications as a 'drag-and-drop' design element into custom IC designs will give us a competitive time-to-market edge as we create products for our customers." Wipro will demonstrate its 1394 synthesizable cores, manufactured using VLSI's 0.35-micron standard cell process technology at this year's 1394 Developers Conference being held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, Calif., June 29 to July 1. The demonstration will show the solutions working with commercially available 1394 devices. About VLSI Technology, Inc.
