>> When I saw this segment, I thought ... what in the hell are we gonna do when we have problems with Y2K in mid-winter up north.

Hell, that's simple. We move in with you!

Utility Brownouts...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cheryl:
I caught part of the CNBC discussion regarding Utility brownouts... With some utilities around the country experiencing these brownouts the timing couldn't be better for the CNBC interview on Monday...
Hopefully Jenkins can draw the parallel between brownouts today and possible Y2k potential power grid failure in 2000... The world is watching... TAVA has the ball...
You know, its funny you should mention electrical problems happening now. My office is in Mountain View, CA and just yesterday the whole downtown area lost power for about 3 hours. The transformer blew and caught on fire.
Things like this really make you think. We had no phones, no fax, etc etc etc.
Nice move on the price today. :-) Planning on taping CNBC on Monday. Don't want to miss Jenkins!
Cheryl,
Thanks for mentioning this CNBC report on electricity supply. My (lame) cable company here in London stopped carrying CNBC a few months ago. Interestingly, this spot tied in perfectly with an article in yesterday's Wall Street Journal which I noted here: exchange2000.com.
I point out the correlation because this is just the sort of perfectly orchestrated hype that the media is capable of when worked properly. I know that you know that. We will be seeing something similar concerning Y2K in the coming months. I made this point to the inimitable Mr. Pink recently here.
When we start seeing front page WSJ articles and CNBC reports/interviews on the same day about Y2K/Y2K companies, we will know the panic is upon us. Hype like this is designed to lure the small investor into the fray. P/E's and traditional valuations will be forgotten (temporarily) as in the Internet stocks. If the Internets can rocket on pure Greed alone, think what the Y2K stocks will do on Panic and Greed combined. Add earnings to that and you have Moonshot.
Before I short any of these stocks, I will certainly have to feel comfortable with the Mass Psychological aspects of the whole Y2K issue. Good luck to those who don't consider that in their timing.
IMHO.
Cheers,
Bond
P.S. I now continue my search for just the right hammock from which to observe matters on 1/1/2000 at my favorite Mediterranean beach.
Hey Beautiful!!
Have you shook out all the cobwebs yet?? The blood level in my alcohol system finally leveled out.... <vbg>
Anyway, just a note on power consumption issues being faced in the central US. As you know increased usage of AC is one of the major factors drawing down the power grid. I don't believe the analogy will be quite the same for 2000.
During the winter of 1999-2000 most individuals will be relying on reliable supplies of natural gas and fuel oil, both of which rely on a reliable production and distribution infrastructure. And as we all have learned over the past years, embedded systems seem very prevalent in the monitoring and flow control machinery in refineries and production platforms.
Time to pop another Prozac....:0(
Glad to hear your flight was productive.
Be good!!
Regards,
Ron
